Tamko Driveway & Pavers: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide
We install and replace Tamko-compatible driveway pavers, edging restraints, and base materials across San Antonio, with paver driveway work typically ranging from $7,000 to $18,000 depending on square footage, access, and base prep. Most homeowners discover a problem the same way: a paver shifts underfoot after the February rain, a section sinks near the curb where the trash bins roll, or the sand between joints washes out faster than it should after a hard summer. The good news is that a failed paver section is usually fixable without tearing up the whole driveway, provided we catch it before the base erodes.
Elmstead Remodeling San Antonio is an independent remodeling contractor. We’re not affiliated with Tamko, but we work with their paver lines regularly and know how their products behave in Texas Hill Country soil.
Which Tamko Models This Applies To

Tamko’s paver line splits into two families: their tumbled concrete pavers, which carry a weathered, softer edge and typically run 60mm thick for driveways, and their permeable pavers, which are cast wider and designed to let water pass through the joints rather than pooling on top. The thickness matters more than most owners expect. A 60mm paver is engineered for vehicle weight. A 40mm paver is a patio product. If someone installed the thinner paver on a driveway, you’ll see cracking near the wheel paths within two or three years, and that’s not a material defect; it’s the wrong paver for the load.
To identify your exact Tamko paver, flip one over. The mold number and production date are usually stamped into the underside. We’ll also measure the paver, the joint width, and check how far the sand has migrated. That tells us whether we can match your existing color lot or whether Tamko has shifted the color slightly since your original install. Color drift between production batches is real, and we’d rather tell you before we set a new paver beside an old one than surprise you after the sand is swept in.

Signs Your Tamko Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- A paver rocks or clicks under your foot. That means the bedding sand has washed out beneath the paver, usually along the edges or low spots where water has been channeling. Left alone, the paver will crack from the flexing.
- Sand keeps washing onto the sidewalk after rain. This is joint sand loss, and in San Antonio’s downpour-heavy spring it accelerates quickly. The joints lose their lock, then the pavers start drifting sideways.
- A low spot forms where the car sits overnight. This is base failure, not paver failure. The gravel beneath the sand has shifted or the soil has settled, and that spot will keep getting deeper until the base is recompacted.
- Weeds are coming through the joints in one concentrated area. Weeds grow where organic material has settled into washed-out joints. It is a symptom of joint failure first, a gardening problem second.
- Edge pavers are separating from the border or curb. The edge restraint has loosened or was never installed correctly. Without a rigid edge, the outer pavers spread outward over time, and the driveway loses its clean line.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

In San Antonio, a full paver driveway replacement runs $7,000 to $18,000, and the range is driven by four things: total square footage, how much of the old base can be salvaged, whether the existing edge restraint is reusable, and access for equipment. A partial repair, where we lift and re-bed a failed section and re-sand the joints, typically falls between $1,000 and $3,500 depending on how many pavers we’re pulling and whether we need to recompact the gravel base.
Every quote we write includes the paver material, base gravel and bedding sand, edge restraint replacement, joint sand, haul-off of the old material, and the labor to compact and level. Nothing is quoted as a range that quietly becomes the top number later. We confirm the material price with our supplier before we hand you the written price, and that price is what you sign. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers every paver project we complete. If a section settles or a joint fails within that first year, we come back and make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely handle the diagnosis: walk the driveway, mark the pavers that rock with a piece of chalk, and note where water pools after a rain. That gives us a head start when we come out. What you should not do is attempt to lift and re-bed pavers yourself if you don’t have a plate compactor and a level. Hand-tamping a paver section almost never matches the density of the surrounding driveway, so you’ll get a visible low spot within a season, and now the repair is more expensive because the base has shifted further. Pulling pavers also exposes the sand, and if rain hits before the section is re-bedded, you’ve made the problem bigger than it was.
If the failing section is near your gas line or along the curb where the City of San Antonio has easement rules, leave it to us. Call (432) 233-0976 and we’ll take a look.
FAQs

A properly installed Tamko paver driveway lasts 25 to 30 years in San Antonio’s climate, with the pavers themselves holding up far better than the base and joints beneath them. The heat doesn’t damage the paver much; the real wear comes from our rain cycles washing out joint sand and the clay-heavy soil expanding and contracting.
Yes, we repair partial sections all the time, and it’s usually the right call when the damage is localized to one low spot or edge. The base beneath the sunken area gets recompacted, the pavers are re-bedded, and the joints are re-sanded. Call (432) 233-0976 if you’re not sure whether your damage is local or structural.
A typical San Antonio paver driveway replacement takes three to five working days, with the base prep taking the longest. Rain pushes the schedule, so we watch the forecast and adjust the start day rather than rush the compaction.
We order Tamko pavers per job so the color lot is as fresh as possible, but we stock the base materials, edge restraints, and joint sand needed for most repairs. Waiting for pavers to arrive usually adds two to three days, and we’ll tell you that timeline before you sign anything.
If you’ve got a Tamko paver section that’s shifting, settling, or washing out, call (432) 233-0976 and ask for Graham. Write it down, price it once, do it right. We’ll get the driveway flat, locked, and ready for the next San Antonio storm.
