James Hardie Bathroom Remodeling: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide

James Hardie bathroom remodeling in San Antonio typically runs $9,000 to $28,000 installed, and we write that price down before any work starts. If you have HardieBacker board behind a failing tile surround or a water-damaged HardieBacker floor underlayment in a San Antonio bathroom, the fix usually means removing the finish layer, replacing the affected cement board, and reinstalling tile or flooring properly. Most owners discover the problem the hard way: a cracked tile that shifts underfoot, a soft spot near the tub, or grout that keeps crumbling no matter how many times it is touched up. What is happening underneath is the reason your bathroom is coming apart. HardieBacker is a cement board that handles San Antonio humidity well, but it is only as good as the waterproofing layer above it and the fasteners holding it down.

The good news is this is a job we do regularly across San Antonio, from Alamo Heights to Castle Hills, and we keep the materials on hand to get a bathroom stripped, repaired, waterproofed, and tiled without bouncing between suppliers. The written price you approve before demo day is the price you pay. No surprise line items after the tile comes up.

Which James Hardie Models This Applies To

For bathrooms, the James Hardie product that matters is HardieBacker cement board, which comes in two main formats: the half-inch version for floors and countertops and the quarter-inch version for walls. The half-inch board is what you want under bathroom floor tile. It is stiff, it does not swell when it gets wet, and it gives tile a stable base that plywood alone cannot provide. The quarter-inch board goes behind wall tile around tubs and showers, usually over a moisture barrier or a surface-applied waterproofing membrane like Schluter Kerdi or Laticrete Hydro Ban.

The compatibility gotcha we see often in San Antonio: HardieBacker quarter-inch board is not a waterproof layer by itself. It is water-durable, which is different. If someone installed tile directly over it without a waterproofing membrane, water eventually works through the grout joints, soaks into the board, and starts degrading the studs behind it. That is not a HardieBacker failure. It is an installation failure, and it is the most common reason a San Antonio bathroom with HardieBacker still rots out. Before we recommend any repair, we check what is behind the board, how the seams were taped, and whether a membrane was used at all.

When it comes to OEM versus aftermarket, HardieBacker is the OEM product here, and we install it as specified. There are less expensive cement boards on the market, and some of them are fine. But the families we work with in San Antonio ask for James Hardie by name because they can verify the warranty and the spec sheet themselves. We would rather install the named material and stand behind it with our 365-Day Done Right Promise than save a homeowner forty dollars on an off-brand board and wonder about it later.

Signs Your James Hardie Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing

  • Tile cracks along a straight line across the floor. This usually means the cement board joints were not staggered or the board was not bedded in thinset, so movement is telegraphing through the finish layer. The tile is the symptom; the board movement underneath is the cause.
  • The floor feels soft or spongy near the toilet or tub. Water has been finding its way to the plywood subfloor beneath the HardieBacker. Cement board does not rot, but by the time the surrounding wood does, the board has been saturated for months.
  • Grout keeps crumbling in the same spot near the shower. That points to a leak at the tile-to-tub junction or a missing moisture barrier behind the wall board. The grout breaks because water keeps softening it from behind.
  • A corner of the room smells musty even after the bathroom has dried out. Water is trapped in the wall cavity or under the floor. In San Antonio’s clay-heavy soil, slab-on-grade homes move seasonally, and small cracks in tile floors let water sit where you cannot see it.
  • You hear a hollow sound when you tap the wall tile. This means the tile has lost its bond to the cement board beneath, often because the board itself was never properly fastened to the studs with the right screws at the right spacing.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A remodeled hall bathroom with subway tile and a floating vanity

For a San Antonio bathroom remodel that involves replacing HardieBacker and rebuilding the surface, expect a full bathroom remodel to run $9,000 to $28,000. A smaller refresh with a new tub surround and partial floor repair can start around $5,000 to $8,500 depending on the tile you select and how much subfloor repair is needed. A walk-in shower rebuild with new HardieBacker walls, waterproofing, and tile typically lands at $4,500 to $12,000. Here is what drives the range:

  • How much of the subfloor or framing has rotted. In older San Antonio homes, especially near Monte Vista or King William, we regularly find water damage extends six inches past the visible problem. That adds framing and blocking work before new board goes down.
  • Tile choice. Porcelain from a big-box shelf installs faster than a hand-made pattern that requires layout time and careful cuts. Materials are part of the written price, but the labor to handle them is not the same.
  • Waterproofing method. A surface-applied membrane costs more in materials than a simple plastic barrier but gives a better long-term result. We will show you both prices and recommend which one makes sense for your house.
  • Plumbing resets and fixture replacement. If we are already down to studs, moving the shower valve or replacing a tub drain is cheaper now than later. We name those line items up front so the final number does not move.

Every quote includes the tear-out, haul-away, the HardieBacker, the waterproofing membrane, the tile installation, the grout and sealant, and the clean-up. We give you a photo of the clean-up before the crew leaves. The written price is the price. If something changes, you sign a change order before we touch it. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the completed project: if it is not right, we make it right.

DIY or Call Us?

Replacing HardieBacker is not a high-tension or electrical job, so the danger is lower than a garage spring or a live panel. What makes DIY go sideways here is sequencing and waterproofing. If the new board is not bedded in thinset, if the seams are not taped with alkali-resistant mesh tape, if the screws are set too deep, the tile will fail and you will be back where you started, out the cost of materials and a weekend. You can safely check a few things yourself: see if any tiles move when you press on them, look for staining at the base of the tub, and note whether the grout in the wet areas is sealed and intact. That helps us quote the job accurately over the phone.

But once the tile comes up, we want the job. Graham Stein and our crew have done this across San Antonio enough times to know that the waterproofing layer is what makes or breaks the rebuild. Write it down, price it once, do it right. Call (432) 233-0976 and we will set up a walkthrough. The estimate is free, the price is written, and you will know exactly what happens to your bathroom before we start.
