James Hardie Fence Installation: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide

James Hardie fence installation in San Antonio typically runs $3,500 – $9,000 for a full perimeter or large side-yard run, including materials, demolition of the old fence if needed, and clean-up. We keep the most common James Hardie fence profiles and trim pieces on the truck, so most jobs go from signed written price to finished fence within a week. What usually brings a homeowner to this page is a section that has started to warp, a post that has kicked out of plumb after a heavy rain, or boards that have pulled loose from the rails along a stretch where sprinklers hit them every morning.

Which James Hardie Models This Applies To

James Hardie does not sell a pre-assembled fence kit. What homeowners actually have is HardiePlank lap siding or HardiePanel vertical siding installed as fence boards on a framed post-and-rail structure. The material matters because HardiePlank is 5/16″ thick while HardiePanel comes in 5/16″ and 7/16″ thicknesses. That 1/8″ difference changes fastener selection and the reveal you can safely run between rails. Check the back of a loose board for the printed batch code and thickness stamp before you buy anything. We match the replacement board to the original profile so the repaired section does not read as a patch. When the original boards are no longer in production, we use the closest current Hardie profile and adjust the reveal to keep the sight lines clean. As an independent San Antonio contractor, we are not affiliated with James Hardie, but we install their product every week and we know which profiles have changed over the years.

Signs Your James Hardie Fence Installation Is Failing

  • Boards pulling away from the rails near the bottom. This usually means the fasteners were driven too close to the board edge or the rail has wicked moisture and started to soften. In San Antonio’s clay soil, posts that move seasonally also stress the fastener line.
  • Warping or buckling mid-span between posts. Fiber cement boards need support at specific intervals. If the original installer stretched the rail spacing past the manufacturer’s max span, the boards deflect under their own weight and hold that curve.
  • Chalky white edges where boards meet. Fiber cement is dimensionally stable, but cut edges that were never sealed will absorb water and swell slightly. The chalk is the board surface breaking down, and it gets worse every wet season.
  • Post rot at grade, with the post leaning. Even with fiber cement boards, the structural posts are almost always wood. San Antonio’s wet spring and dry summer cycle moves moisture through the soil, and an unsealed post base rots faster than most owners expect.
  • Gaps opening at the board joints. If the boards were butted tight when installed, normal thermal movement opens hairline cracks that let water behind the face. The fix is replacing the affected boards with a small, consistent expansion gap.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A full James Hardie fence installation in San Antonio lands between $3,500 and $9,000. The low end covers a shorter single-side run with simple post replacement and standard HardiePlank boards. The higher end reflects long perimeter fences, 7/16″ HardiePanel, steel post upgrades, or removal of a heavy wood fence that has to be hauled off. Every project we price is a written line-item quote before we start, so you see the board cost, post cost, labor, and disposal as separate lines. We do not change that number once the crew arrives unless you ask us to expand the scope of work. The workmanship is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise, and the James Hardie product warranty applies to the boards themselves.

DIY or Call Us?

Replacing a single board on a reachable section is fair game for a homeowner who has the right blade and knows the fastener pattern. What we tell people to leave alone is anything structural: a leaning post, a sagging rail, or a section where more than three boards are loose. Fiber cement is heavy, and a full sheet that slips during handling can cause a serious injury. If the post is leaning, the fix usually means digging a new hole, setting the post in concrete, and re-attaching the rails straight before the boards go back on. That is a two-person job with a level and a lot of patience. Talk to us first if you are unsure: (432) 233-0976.
