James Hardie Kitchen Remodeling: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide

James Hardie kitchen remodeling in San Antonio typically runs $14,000 – $45,000 installed, depending on cabinet count, countertop material, and how much of the existing footprint stays put. We stock James Hardie trim, siding, and backer board on our trucks so samples match what gets installed, not a catalog photo. Most San Antonio homeowners call us after they’ve noticed water staining at the base of a kitchen wall, cracked caulk lines behind the sink, or swelling at the edge of a Hardie panel where moisture has gotten behind the finish. By the time a panel is bowing or a seam is pulling apart, the problem has usually been at work for months behind the surface.

The good news is Hardie products are built for South Texas humidity and the heat that hits San Antonio from May through September. The less good news is that installation errors from a previous remodel, a bad flashing detail, or the wrong fasteners can shorten the life of an otherwise tough material. We see it in older San Antonio kitchens near the King William Historic District, where original framing shifts and a prior contractor’s shortcut becomes visible after a few damp seasons.

Which James Hardie Models This Applies To

A small remodeled galley kitchen with cabinets to the ceiling

HardieBacker cement board is the James Hardie product that shows up most in kitchens. You’ll find it in ¼-inch sheets for floors and ½-inch sheets for walls, both in a 3-foot by 5-foot format. The ¼-inch version sits under tile on a kitchen floor; the ½-inch version goes behind backsplash tile and around sink and range areas. If you’re looking at a kitchen with a Hardie exterior wall transitioning inside, you may also have HardiePlank lap siding or HardiePanel vertical siding on an exterior kitchen wall, typically 5/16-inch thick with a 7¼-inch exposure on traditional lap profiles.

The compatibility gotcha: HardieBacker is not the same as HardieBacker 500 or a no-name cement board sold at a big box store. James Hardie names its thicknesses by actual dimension, not nominal. A ¼-inch sheet measures 0.25 inches. Many cheaper cement boards run 0.42 inches under a “half-inch” label but are brittle by comparison. If a previous contractor used a different board behind your backsplash, you may see tile crack lines that trace the board’s seams. For San Antonio homes with pier-and-beam foundations, that movement shows up faster than on slab, and the board has to be installed with the correct fastener spacing or the tile above it will telegraph every flex.

We carry HardieBacker ¼-inch and ½-inch on the truck, along with HardiePlank lap siding for exterior-to-interior transitions. We also work with KraftMaid and Wellborn cabinets, plus Cambria and Silestone countertops, so a James Hardie substrate gets paired with surfaces whose warranties don’t fight each other.

Signs Your James Hardie Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing

  • Cracked grout lines that keep coming back. When the cement board behind tile flexes at the seams, the grout cracks in straight lines first. You can regrout it, and the crack comes back within a season. The board underneath is moving, and caulking won’t fix it.
  • Dark staining at the base of a kitchen wall or under a window. HardieBacker withstands moisture, but the joint tape and the seam compound around it do not. If water gets past the tile and sits, you’ll see a shadow appear along the lowest course of tile first.
  • A soft spot in the floor at the dishwasher or sink cabinet. A ¼-inch HardieBacker layer over a subfloor that wasn’t properly prepped will flex and eventually telegraph through the tile. You’ll feel it underfoot before you can see it.
  • Caulk peeling away where the countertop meets the backsplash. The countertop and the wall move at different rates in San Antonio heat. When the caulk fails, water follows the crack and gets behind the HardieBacker. Recaulking is fine; the question is what has already happened behind it.
  • Tile sounding hollow when tapped. Thinset can fail from heat cycling, especially around a range or a south-facing wall. If large sections echo, the bond has failed and the tile is being held in place by grout and luck.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A walk-in pantry with wood shelving

A full James Hardie kitchen remodel in San Antonio runs $14,000 – $45,000. A smaller job, like replacing the HardieBacker behind a failing backsplash and re-tiling that section, lands in the $2,000 – $6,500 range. Full kitchen numbers depend on linear feet of cabinetry, countertop material, appliance placement, and whether the plumbing or electrical has to move. We give you a written price before any work starts, broken down line by line, and the price you sign is the price you pay.

What’s included on every job: shoe covers and drop cloths before the first panel comes off the truck, quiet tools during nap and school hours where the schedule allows, pet-safe adhesive and caulk choices where there’s an equivalent product, and a photo of the clean-up before the crew leaves. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the completed work. If a seam opens or a panel shifts after we’re done, we make it right.

DIY or Call Us?

What an owner can safely do: inspect exterior HardiePlank lap joints from the ground, check that sprinkler heads aren’t spraying the kitchen’s exterior wall, and verify that downspouts divert water away from the foundation near the kitchen. What gets risky is cutting cement board without proper respiration and dust control, handling and taping seams behind tile, and fastening a ½-inch board overhead or around an existing window without the right screws and spacing. HardieBacker dust is silica dust. You do not want that in a home with kids or pets, and a shop vac doesn’t catch it.

Graham Stein will always tell you the same thing: write it down, price it once, do it right. If you’re unsure whether a failing seam is cosmetic or structural, call (432) 233-0976 and we’ll come look before you spend money on a guess.
