Boxabl Driveway & Pavers: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide
If you own a Boxabl home in San Antonio and the driveway or paver system has started to fail, we stock compatible replacement pavers, base materials, and edge restraints, and we install them for a typical price of $7,000 to $18,000 depending on square footage, paver type, and the condition of the base underneath. That price includes removal of the failed section, base repair, new pavers, sand, compaction, and a written price before any tool leaves the truck. Most Boxabl owners call us because they’ve noticed a paver sinking near the entry, water pooling after a hard rain, or a section of the driveway shifting away from the home’s edge.
We’re an independent San Antonio contractor, not affiliated with Boxabl, but we’ve worked on enough Boxabl homes across the city to know their site-prep and drainage patterns well. Graham Stein and our crew have built and repaired paver driveways near the King William Historic District and in neighborhoods across San Antonio, and the same thing shows up on every Boxabl: the pavers themselves are fine, but the base underneath was never compacted for Texas clay soil, so it shifts with our wet-dry cycles.
Which Boxabl Models This Applies To

Boxabl homes ship as a folded module that gets placed on a prepared site, but the driveway and paver work happens on-site after the module is set, which means the paver specifications are not tied to a specific Boxabl model line the way an interior component would be. That said, we see the same two setups on most Boxabl properties in San Antonio: a concrete driveway apron with paver accents, or a full paver driveway using 60mm or 80mm interlocking concrete pavers. The 60mm pavers are rated for pedestrian and light vehicle traffic, while the 80mm pavers are the correct choice for a driveway that will carry a pickup truck or SUV daily.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most owners miss: Boxabl’s standard site plan calls for a compacted gravel base under the driveway, but San Antonio’s expansive clay soil moves more than the national average, so a base that works in Nevada or Arizona will fail here in five to seven years. When we replace Boxabl driveway pavers in San Antonio, we always excavate to a full 6 to 8 inches of compacted, stabilized base, not just the 4 inches the original spec called for. That single change is the difference between a driveway that lasts twelve years and one that needs re-leveling every three. If you can find the site-prep documentation that came with your Boxabl delivery, bring it to the walkthrough and we’ll match the paver manufacturer and color rather than guessing from a photo.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: Boxabl does not manufacture pavers. The pavers on your Boxabl driveway were sourced by the site contractor, almost always from a regional paver manufacturer. That means you’re not tied to a Boxabl-specific part here, the way you would be for a wall panel or a hinge. What matters is matching paver thickness (60mm or 80mm), shape (most Boxabl driveways use a rectangular paver in a running bond or herringbone pattern), and color blend. We stock common San Antonio paver blends on the truck, including the tan, gray, and charcoal tones that show up on most Boxabl installs.

Signs Your Boxabl Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Paver sinking or creating a low spot near the module’s edge. This is the first symptom we see on Boxabl homes in San Antonio. The clay soil under the paver base expands when wet and contracts when dry, and over time the base material migrates into the clay, leaving a void under the pavers that shows up as a dip near the home’s corner.
- Water pooling on the driveway after a light rain. A properly installed paver driveway should shed water in minutes, not hours. If you’re seeing a puddle that sits for a day, the base has settled and the slope is gone. On a Boxabl, this often happens near the entry door where the original site contractor didn’t extend the drain plane far enough.
- Pavers shifting sideways or opening up gaps along the edge restraint. When the plastic or aluminum edge restraint fails, the outer row of pavers loses its anchor and starts walking outward. We’ve replaced dozens of these on San Antonio Boxabl homes where the original edge restraint was just a plastic strip staked into topsoil.
- Weeds or grass growing up through the paver joints. This means the joint sand is gone and the base is washing out underneath. In San Antonio’s summer heat, the sand dries out and blows away, and the next hard rain pushes soil up through the open joints.
- A paver cracking down the middle under normal foot or vehicle traffic. A 60mm paver that was installed where an 80mm paver belonged will eventually split. If you’re seeing clean cracks through the center of multiple pavers in the same area, the original site contractor used the wrong thickness for the load.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Paver driveway installation in San Antonio runs $7,000 to $18,000, and that’s the range you should expect whether you’re replacing a failed Boxabl driveway or installing a new paver driveway from scratch. The biggest cost drivers are square footage, paver thickness (80mm pavers cost more per square foot than 60mm), the depth of excavation needed to reach stable soil, and whether we’re reusing a section or redoing the whole driveway. A partial repair, where we lift and re-level a 200-square-foot section, typically lands at the lower end of that range or below, while a full replacement on a long driveway approaches the upper end.
Every quote includes the same line items, and you’ll see them all on the written price before we start: removal and haul-off of the failed pavers and base, excavation to depth, new compacted base material, bedding sand, the pavers themselves (matched to your existing color and thickness), edge restraints, joint sand, and full compaction. There are no line items added after we start. If we find something unexpected under the old driveway, like a broken irrigation line, we’ll name it and price it before we touch it, and you decide whether to move forward. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the pavers shift, crack, or settle within the first year, we come back and make it right at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
There is one safe DIY step: you can sweep sand into open paver joints to slow the wash-out while you’re deciding on a repair. Paver sand is available at any San Antonio landscape supply yard for under $20 a bag, and working it into the joints with a broom will buy you a few months. What you should not do is lift the pavers yourself to inspect the base. Once you break the edge restraint and start pulling pavers, the whole field can shift, and you’ll be left with a bigger repair than the one you started with. Re-compacting a paver base to the density a driveway needs requires a plate compactor and an eye for slope, and doing it halfway means the same failure comes back in two years.
If the pavers are sinking, pooling water, or cracking, call us at (432) 233-0976. We’ll come out, lift a test section, and show you exactly what’s happening underneath before you spend a dollar on the repair.
FAQs

With a properly compacted base, a paver driveway in San Antonio should last 20 to 25 years before the pavers themselves need replacement. Pavers that fail in under ten years are almost always failing because of the base, not the paver. If your Boxabl driveway is showing symptoms at five to seven years, the original base wasn’t built for our clay soil, and repairing the base now will extend the life of the pavers significantly. Call (432) 233-0976 for an exact assessment, and we’ll tell you honestly whether you need a full replacement or just a re-level.
Yes, in most cases a section of a Boxabl driveway can be lifted, the base re-compacted, and the same pavers reinstalled for less than a full replacement. The exception is when the pavers themselves are cracked or the base has eroded so thoroughly that the soil underneath is compromised. We’ll always quote the repair option first when it’s viable. Call (432) 233-0976 to schedule a walkthrough, and we’ll show you what’s under the pavers before we recommend either path.
Most full replacements on a Boxabl property in San Antonio take three to five working days from excavation to final compaction. A partial re-level is usually one day. We schedule the work around your family’s normal routine, use quiet tools during rest hours where possible, and lay drop cloths inside if we need to move through the home to access the site.
We stock the most common San Antonio paver blends in both 60mm and 80mm thicknesses on our truck, so on most Boxabl driveways we can match the color and size on the first visit. If your pavers are a less common color or shape, we order from the same regional manufacturers the original site contractors use, and the lead time is typically three to five days. Call (432) 233-0976 and we’ll confirm what’s on hand for your specific blend before we schedule the estimate.
