PGT Kitchen Remodeling: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide

We install PGT kitchen windows as part of full kitchen remodels across San Antonio, and we regularly replace failed or fogged PGT units during cabinet, countertop, and backsplash work. A full kitchen remodel in San Antonio with PGT windows currently runs $14,000 to $45,000 depending on window count, cabinet grade, and countertop material. If you’re noticing condensation between panes, a window that won’t seal, or a frame that has warped in the Texas sun, that’s the moment to address the PGT glass while the kitchen is already open. Waiting usually means paying twice for labor when the wall has to be reopened later.

What follows is the guide we wish every PGT owner had before a kitchen project starts: which models we work with, what fails first in this climate, what replacement actually costs, and when a repair makes more sense than a swap.

Which PGT Models This Applies To

PGT builds two window lines that show up most often in San Antonio kitchens: the WinGuard impact series and the Eze-Breeze casement line, plus older aluminum single-hung units that predate the current catalog. The WinGuard series is the one we see in homes near the King William Historic District, where original window openings are often non-standard sizes and replacement requires custom orders rather than off-the-shelf glass. To identify what you have, look for the etched corner mark on the glass surface or the white PGT sticker on the frame edge; both carry the model code and the glass pack date.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people miss: PGT impact glass is sold as a complete sash unit, not as replacement glass you can cut on site. The glass pack is laminated and sealed at the factory, so a failed seal means a new sash ordered to the original frame’s exact dimensions. We measure the rough opening and the daylight opening separately, because San Antonio homes with stucco exteriors often have a frame that settled against the opening. Aftermarket equivalents exist for some Eze-Breeze parts, but for impact-rated glass we always recommend OEM PGT sashes: the wind-load rating travels with the product, and a generic laminated unit will not carry the same Miami-Dade or Texas Department of Insurance documentation. We stock common PGT latch sets, hinge pins, and crank handles on the truck; sashes are ordered per-job to match the frame serial.

Signs Your PGT Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing

  • Condensation trapped between the panes. The seal between the glass layers has failed. In San Antonio’s humidity swings, a broken seal shows up as fog that never wipes away, and it means the argon or krypton gas fill has escaped. The window still functions, but the insulating value is gone.
  • The crank window won’t close flush against the frame. Casement hardware wears out a little more each time the crank is forced. Eventually the sash sags or the hinge pins oval out the frame holes. You’ll feel resistance, then a soft spot, then the window simply won’t compress the weatherstripping.
  • Daylight is visible at the corner of the frame. The frame has warped or the installation shims have settled. In older San Antonio homes with clay-soil movement, this is extremely common. A gap at the corner means water and outside air are getting in around the window, not through it.
  • The latch no longer engages with a firm click. PGT’s lock points are a wear item. When a latch goes soft, the window is no longer sealing under compression. This matters for impact units, which rely on full perimeter locking to maintain their rating.
  • Visible corrosion or white powder on the aluminum frame. Coastal-influenced humidity and sprinkler overspray will eventually pit anodized aluminum. The powder is oxidation; once it’s visible, the frame is losing material. It doesn’t mean the window will fall out tomorrow, but it means replacement is in the conversation rather than repair.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

An open kitchen and dining area after a remodel

The price to replace PGT kitchen windows inside a San Antonio kitchen remodel lands between $14,000 and $45,000 when you’re doing the full room: cabinets, counters, backsplash, and the glass. For window work alone, a single PGT WinGuard kitchen sash replacement typically falls in the $1,800 to $4,500 range installed, depending on size, series, and whether the frame needs re-shimming. A full kitchen of four to six PGT windows usually adds $7,000 to $16,000 to the project total.

What moves the number: custom versus stock sash dimensions, whether we’re reusing the existing frame or setting a new one, and whether stucco repair is needed around the opening. We write the price before any work starts and it does not change after the crew arrives unless you change the scope, in writing, first. Every replacement sash carries PGT’s manufacturer warranty, and our labor and installation are covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not done right after the job is complete, we make it right.

DIY or Call Us?

Safety first, plainly: PGT impact windows are heavy. A WinGuard sash can weigh 60 to 90 pounds depending on size. Attempting to lift a glazed sash out of a frame without a second person, proper glazing gloves, and a stable ladder is how people get hurt. The glass is laminated, which is exactly what protects your family from storm debris, but it also means a cracked or shattered unit doesn’t fall away cleanly; it holds together as a heavy sheet. We don’t recommend DIY sash replacement on WinGuard units, and we say that as a crew that has done thousands of them.

What you can safely do yourself: look at the corner sticker, write down the model and glass date, and measure the daylight opening width and height to the nearest 1/16th inch. Take a photo of the frame from the outside, the inside, and the etched glass mark. That’s everything we need to start your quote over the phone. The actual swap is a two-person job done with shims, a level, and careful re-sealing of the pan. Call (432) 233-0976 and we’ll walk through what you’re seeing, match the sash, and give you a written price before we schedule the truck.
