Boral Bathroom Remodeling: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide
Boral bathroom remodeling in San Antonio typically runs $9,000 to $28,000 depending on the scope, and yes, we work with Boral materials and Boral-compatible systems on most of those projects. If you’re here because a specific Boral product failed or is wearing out, you probably noticed it in the shower pan, the wall boards, or the trim work around the tub. The good news: most Boral failures in our part of Texas are repairable without gutting the whole bathroom, and we stock common Boral-compatible replacement parts on our trucks.
What usually brings a San Antonio homeowner to this page is a crack in a Boral shower base, water staining at the seam where the Boral wall board meets the pan, or soft spots showing up after a few hard Texas summers. We’ll walk through what fails first, what it costs to fix properly, and whether you should touch it yourself or call us. I’m Graham Stein, owner of Elmstead Remodeling San Antonio, and the written price you sign with us is the price you pay, no surprises after demo day.
Which Boral Models This Applies To

Boral makes a few product lines that show up repeatedly in San Antonio bathrooms: their pressed composite shower bases, their moisture-resistant wall boards, and their exterior trim products that sometimes carry into bathroom windows or accent details. The most common Boral product we repair in bathrooms is the shower base or tub surround, usually identified by a molded logo stamped on the underside or back of the panel. If you’re not sure what you have, take a photo of the failed area from a few angles, and we can identify it from the photos before we ever step foot in your house.
One compatibility gotcha: Boral shower bases from the mid-2000s used a slightly different drain offset than current models. If you’re hoping to swap just the base and keep the existing drain plumbing, we need to measure that offset. San Antonio homes built in different decades also have different rough-in dimensions, and a Boral base that fit a 1980s Alamo Heights home won’t necessarily drop into a 2015 Stone Oak build without adjustment. We’ll measure before we order, which saves you the cost of a part that arrives and doesn’t fit.
On OEM versus aftermarket: Boral’s own replacement parts are solid, but they’re not always the fastest to source in San Antonio. For wall boards and trim, there are quality aftermarket equivalents that match Boral’s dimensions and hold up as well in our humidity. For shower pans, we typically stick with Boral OEM where possible, because the drain geometry is less forgiving. We’ll quote both options when they exist and let you decide with the prices in front of you.

Signs Your Boral Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing
- Cracking or crazing in the shower base. This happens when the base was installed on an uneven subfloor, and years of weight find the stress point. In San Antonio, the clay soil means slabs move more than people expect, and hairline cracks in a Boral pan are often the first visible sign.
- Discoloration or swelling at the pan-to-wall seam. Water is getting behind the seal. Boral wall boards handle moisture well, but a failed silicone seam will let water wick into the substrate, and by the time you see the staining, the caulk has been compromised for a while.
- A musty smell that comes and goes. That’s trapped moisture behind the panel. It typically spikes after a hot shower and fades by morning. San Antonio’s heat does not help; a small leak becomes a mold problem faster here than in drier climates.
- Soft spots in the wall board, especially near the base. Boral boards resist moisture longer than drywall, but they’re not waterproof forever. If you can press the board and feel give, the structural layer behind it is already damaged.
- Caulk that keeps pulling away from the Boral surface. Some off-the-shelf caulks don’t bond well to Boral’s composite surface. If you’ve re-caulked twice and it keeps peeling, the joint needs a professional prep treatment and a caulk rated for that material.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

A Boral shower base replacement in San Antonio typically lands between $3,000 and $8,500, which includes pulling the old pan, inspecting and leveling the subfloor, installing the new Boral or compatible base, and re-sealing the surround. If the wall boards need to come out and be replaced, you’re looking at $9,000 to $28,000 for a full Boral bathroom remodel, depending on how much tile, glass, and fixture work you bundle in. Tubs and shower surrounds that stay in place usually run toward the lower end; a full gut and rebuild with Boral boards, new valve, new glass, and new trim kit lands in the upper range.
Every quote we write includes the parts, the labor, the disposal of the old materials, the shoe covers, the drop cloths, and a photo of the clean-up before we leave. The price is written down before any work starts, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise means if something isn’t right after the project is complete, we make it right. No change orders added after demo day, no “we discovered something” line items.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely do a few things yourself before you pick up the phone. Check whether the crack in the base actually goes through the material, or whether it’s just a surface mark. Run water and watch where it goes. Re-caulking a seam is fine if the board behind it is still solid. What you should not do is cut into a Boral pan or wall board to “look” for water damage. Once you breach that surface, you’ve turned a $300 caulk fix into a full base replacement, and if the subfloor turns out to be rotten, that’s structural work that belongs with a trained crew.
If you’re not sure, call us at (432) 233-0976 and describe what you’re seeing. We’ll tell you over the phone whether it sounds like a caulk job or a full replacement, and what to expect either way. The call costs nothing and you’ll know more than you did before you made it.
FAQs

A properly installed Boral shower base lasts 15 to 25 years in San Antonio’s climate, depending on water hardness, subfloor stability, and whether the drain was sealed correctly at install. Hard water from the Edwards Aquifer shortens seal life, and homes on expansive clay soil see more subfloor movement. Call (432) 233-0976 and we’ll tell you if yours is at the end of its life or has years left.
Small surface cracks can sometimes be patched with a composite repair kit rated for Boral material, and we stock those on the truck. If the crack runs edge to edge or flexes when you stand on it, replacement is the honest fix. A patch that fails in six months costs more than doing it right once.
A base-only swap is typically a one-day job. If the wall boards come out too, plan on three to five working days, which includes inspection, install, waterproofing, and cure time before the first shower. We schedule around children’s sleep hours and use quiet tools where possible, so the house stays livable while we’re there.
We stock common Boral-compatible wall boards, caulks, and drain assemblies on our service trucks. Odd-size Boral pans and special-order trim usually arrive within a week in San Antonio. We never charge you for a part order until we’ve confirmed the exact spec with a photo and a measurement.
We’re an independent San Antonio remodeling contractor and not affiliated with Boral, but we work with their products regularly and we also stock compatible parts for KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone installs when a larger remodel calls for it. Write it down, price it once, do it right. Call (432) 233-0976 to schedule a free estimate, and we’ll walk the bathroom with you, name every part that needs attention, and hand you a written price before the first tool leaves the truck.
