CertainTeed Kitchen Remodeling: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide
If you have CertainTeed products in your kitchen and a part has failed or worn out, we can help. Elmstead Remodeling San Antonio installs and replaces CertainTeed-compatible kitchen components as part of a full kitchen remodel, with most projects running $14,000 to $45,000 depending on scope. You’ll get a written price before any work starts, and we can typically begin within a few days of your call, not weeks.
Most San Antonio homeowners discover a CertainTeed part has failed the same way: a drawer stops closing flush, a cabinet door sags an eighth of an inch, or a piece of trim begins to pull away from the wall. It may look small, but in a Texas kitchen that cycles through humidity swings from spring storms to dry summer heat, a failing cabinet or surface component rarely fixes itself. The sooner we identify the specific part, the less likely you are dealing with a cascading repair.
We’re an independent San Antonio remodeling contractor. We’re not affiliated with CertainTeed, but we work with their products regularly and know how they fit into the broader kitchen system.
Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To

CertainTeed makes a range of building materials that often appear in San Antonio kitchens: gypsum board, backer board, insulation, and in some homes, CertainTeed-branded trim and moulding products. The part that usually fails in a kitchen remodel context is not the board itself, but what’s attached to it, or the board’s edge where it meets a cabinet run or countertop.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people don’t know: CertainTeed drywall and backer board come in thicknesses of 1/4 inch, 1/2 inch, and 5/8 inch. If your kitchen has a 5/8-inch Type X fire-rated board behind a range or cooktop, you cannot swap in standard 1/2-inch board and maintain the fire rating. We verify the existing thickness before touching anything, because getting this wrong can mean a failed inspection or worse.
For trim and moulding, CertainTeed’s Restoration Millwork line uses a cellular PVC that expands and contracts differently than wood. In San Antonio’s heat, that expansion needs proper gapping at joints. If a previous installer butted the pieces tight, the joints will buckle. We see this in older kitchens across Alamo Heights, Stone Oak, and the King William area.
When it comes to OEM CertainTeed parts versus quality aftermarket equivalents, the answer depends on the application. For gypsum and backer board, OEM CertainTeed is the standard we recommend for most remodels because the paper face, core density, and fire rating are consistent. For trim and moulding, a quality aftermarket cellular PVC product can sometimes match better to existing profiles if CertainTeed has changed their millwork patterns over the years. Graham Stein checks the profile with a contour gauge before recommending one path or the other.

Signs Your CertainTeed Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing
- Visible cracking at drywall seams near cabinets or windows. This usually means the original tape job wasn’t reinforced or the house has shifted through a drought cycle. The fix involves removing the old tape, re-floating, and often adding fiberglass mesh tape for stability.
- Trim pulling away from the wall or separating at corners. Cellular PVC trim moves with temperature. If there’s no room for that movement, the joints open up. This is a re-cut and re-gap job, not a caulk-and-hope job.
- Backer board crumbling behind a backsplash or under a counter edge. Moisture has reached the board. In San Antonio kitchens, this often starts at the sink or dishwasher line. The board must come out and be replaced before new tile goes on.
- Soft spots or swelling around a window or exterior door in the kitchen. This points to water intrusion past the building envelope. We trace the leak source first, then replace the damaged CertainTeed board and any affected trim.
- Discoloration or mold smell near the base of cabinet runs. The board behind the cabinets has absorbed moisture. Full removal of the affected section is needed; surface cleaning will not fix it.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

A full kitchen remodel in San Antonio, including CertainTeed-compatible drywall, backer board, and trim work, runs $14,000 to $45,000. The range depends on kitchen size, cabinet count, countertop material, and how much of the underlying board needs replacement.
For the CertainTeed-specific part of the work, here’s how it breaks down:
- Drywall replacement in a standard 10×12 kitchen: $800 to $2,500 depending on extent and finish level.
- Backer board replacement behind a backsplash: $400 to $1,200 including removal and re-installation.
- Trim and moulding replacement for a kitchen with 20 linear feet of trim: $600 to $2,000 depending on profile and finish.
Every price is written down before the crew arrives. You’ll know the parts cost, the labor cost, and the total, and that total will not change after demo day unless you ask us to change the scope. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not done right after we leave, we make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
Some things you can safely check yourself: whether the board is 1/2 inch or 5/8 inch thick (measure at an exposed edge or inside a cabinet opening), whether trim joints are gapped or butted tight, and whether there’s a musty smell around the sink base. Those observations help us quote more accurately over the phone.
What you should not do is remove backer board or drywall panels yourself if they’re near a gas line, a water line, or electrical runs. Cutting into a wall without knowing what’s behind it is how people hit a wire or a pipe. In older San Antonio homes near King William, we’ve found everything from knob-and-tube remnants to plumbing that was never up to current code. We map the wall before we open it, and we recommend you let a trained crew do the same. Call (432) 233-0976 and we’ll schedule a walkthrough.
FAQs

CertainTeed gypsum board and backer board typically last 30 to 50 years in a San Antonio kitchen if they stay dry. Moisture shortens that dramatically, which is why proper sealing at sinks, dishwashers, and exterior doors matters more than the board itself. Cellular PVC trim can last 25+ years with correct gapping at joints.
Small drywall cracks at seams can often be re-taped and floated without full replacement. Trim that has separated at joints can sometimes be re-cut and re-gapped. But if the material is crumbling, soft, or moldy, repair won’t hold and replacement is the honest answer. We’ll tell you which situation you have before quoting anything. Call (432) 233-0976 for an exact assessment, and estimates are free.
Drywall and backer board replacement in a standard San Antonio kitchen typically takes 1 to 3 days including dry time between coats. Trim replacement adds another day or two. A full kitchen remodel with cabinets, countertops, and fixtures runs 3 to 8 weeks depending on scope.
We keep common CertainTeed gypsum board thicknesses and standard trim profiles on hand for kitchen work in San Antonio. Unusual profiles or large runs are ordered per job, usually with a 2 to 4 day lead time. We’ll confirm availability when we walk your project.
