American Standard Driveway & Pavers: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide
If you’re hunting for a replacement part or a full American Standard driveway & pavers installation in San Antonio, we stock compatible components and can typically have your project priced and scheduled within days. A paver driveway installation in San Antonio runs $7,000 to $18,000, and a concrete driveway installation runs $4,500 to $12,000 depending on square footage, site prep, and drainage. Most homeowners call us after noticing a section that has settled, cracked, or begun separating from the edge restraints – often right after a heavy Texas rain exposes the weak spot.
We’re not affiliated with American Standard. We’re Elmstead Remodeling San Antonio, and we work with their driveway and paver product lines because they hold up well to San Antonio’s clay soil and summer heat when installed correctly. What we’ve learned from years of jobs across the city, including older neighborhoods near the King William Historic District, is that the part itself rarely fails in isolation. Usually it’s the base underneath, the edge restraint, or the joint sand that gave way first. That’s the diagnosis we start with, and it’s the only way to avoid replacing a paver only to watch it sink again next season.
Which American Standard Models This Applies To

American Standard’s driveway and paver line spans three general categories: concrete pavers (most common for driveways in San Antonio), permeable pavers (built for drainage, which matters on clay-heavy San Antonio soil), and edge restraints and joint materials that complete the system. The model number is usually stamped on the underside of a paver or printed on the original materials invoice under a product code starting with AS-P. If you can’t read the stamp, measure the paver’s thickness – American Standard driveway pavers typically come in 60mm and 80mm thicknesses – and the depth of your current base. That measurement matters more than the paver pattern; an 80mm paver over a 4-inch crushed granite base will outlast a 60mm paver over 2 inches of sand every time in Texas clay.
For replacements, OEM American Standard pavers are the cleanest match in color and dimension. Quality aftermarket pavers from Texas suppliers often run 10 to 20 percent less and can match closely, but color variation between manufacturing runs is real. If you’re replacing a section, we typically recommend OEM for driveway work where a color mismatch will be obvious from the street. For patio or walkway patches, a well-matched aftermarket paver is often fine. We stock the most common American Standard driveway paver dimensions on our truck and can source specialty sizes within a week, including the 80mm heavy-traffic pavers that the strip of driveways near Alamo Heights regularly require.

Signs Your American Standard Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Pavers sinking in a low spot after rain: This almost always means the sand base has washed out or the underlying clay soil has shifted. San Antonio’s clay expands when wet and contracts in dry heat, and that cycling is what moves pavers. The paver usually isn’t broken – the base is gone.
- Edge pavers pulling away from the driveway border: The edge restraint (plastic or aluminum) has failed or was never installed deep enough. Once the edge fails, the whole field of pavers starts migrating outward under vehicle weight. Catch this early and you can reset the edge without replacing pavers.
- Cracks running through multiple pavers in a line: This points to too thin a base for the load, or a low spot where trucks or delivery vans have driven. Replacing cracked pavers without fixing the base means you’ll be doing it again within a year or two.
- Weeds pushing up between pavers: Joint sand has broken down or washed out, and organic material has taken its place. The fix is removing the plants, re-sanding with polymeric joint sand, and sealing – but this only lasts if drainage is still working. If water pools in that same area, address drainage first.
- White chalky residue spreading across the paver surface (efflorescence): Moisture is wicking through the pavers and carrying minerals to the surface. It’s cosmetic and cleanable with a paver-specific cleaner, but it tells you water is moving through the system in a way it shouldn’t. Sealing after cleaning keeps it from returning quickly in San Antonio’s humid spring months.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For a full paver driveway installation in San Antonio, expect $7,000 to $18,000. That range covers tear-out of the old driveway, base excavation to the proper depth, installation of edge restraints, new pavers, joint sand, and final compaction. A concrete driveway installation runs $4,500 to $12,000. Smaller repairs – resetting a sunken section, replacing a dozen cracked pavers, or re-sanding and sealing – typically run $250 to $700 for the sealing end and scale from there based on how much base rebuilding is required.
Every job starts with a written price before any work begins. Graham Stein writes every scope of work down before a single tool leaves the truck – the written price you sign is the price you pay, no line items added after demo day. That price includes the drop cloths and shoe covers inside your house if the crew needs to walk through, the clean-up photo before we leave, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not done right after the job is complete, we make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself: is a paver wobbly but the surrounding field still level? Is the joint sand thin in one area but not pooling water? Those are watch items. What you shouldn’t do is pull up a large section of pavers without understanding what’s underneath, because once the base is disturbed, the repair scope grows fast. Heavy paver work involves lifting, compacting, and leveling through multiple passes – and if your driveway slopes toward your foundation (common in older San Antonio neighborhoods), improper grading sends water toward your house. That’s a costly mistake to learn on your own property.
If the area is more than a few square feet, or you see sinking near the foundation line, call us at (432) 233-0976. We’ll come out, check the base depth and drainage, and give you a written price that tells you exactly what needs to happen and what it will cost.
FAQs

With a properly compacted base and intact edge restraints, American Standard driveway pavers last 20 to 30 years in San Antonio’s climate. The base typically fails before the pavers do. Call (432) 233-0976 and we’ll check yours before you spend on replacement.
Hairline cracks can often be stabilized with joint sand and sealing, but a paver cracked through its thickness should be replaced. It will keep moving under load and eventually break apart. We’ll tell you which is which during the estimate.
A small section repair usually takes one to two days. A full paver driveway replacement in San Antonio typically runs five to eight working days including base prep, drainage check, installation, and sealing. We write the timeframe into the scope of work so you know before we start.
We stock the most common American Standard driveway paver sizes and colors on our trucks, including the 60mm and 80mm residential lines. Specialty or color-matched pavers take about a week to source. Call (432) 233-0976 with your model number or a photo and we’ll tell you same-day what’s on hand.
